I’m a mum of an amazing bundle of joy Oliver and a happy wife. I’m a sales leader with about 20+ years of experience working in a corporate world in EMEA and APAC regions.

And I’m very proud or being an internationally certified Yoga Teacher as well, apparently I’m someone like you, who is looking to evoking health and balance.

Nowadays, we often see health problems being classified into physical issues & mental issues. In truth, is there really a real sharp division between mind and body?

When one is unwell, the other feels unwell too in our everyday experience.

It is very difficult to feel well in our mind if our body does not support that feeling from bottom up. Similarly, if the mind is disturbed or anxious, it is impossible to feel light and healthy in the body. Yoga is primarily about self-care, and we need to bring awareness to, and work with body and mind holistically, if we wish to maintain our health and longevity.

Fight depression through exercise?

I trully believe that practicing yoga and physical activity helps mental health.

We all want to be healthy in both body and mind. Yoga and Ayurveda, two ancient systems, provide a complete and balanced way to improve our overall health and well-being.

They focus on six main areas of health:

Body
This includes yoga poses (asanas), how we move, stay in one position, patterns of movement, the spine, and posture.

Mind
This covers awareness, mindfulness, emotional health, thinking, and relaxation.

Breath
Breathing exercises (pranayama) help with stress relief, physical health, and overall body function.

Diet
Eating healthy and with mindfulness supports the body’s systems, including digestion.

Lifestyle
This involves daily habits, sleep, routines, and the choices we make.

Environment
This looks at both physical and mental surroundings, relationships, work, and balance in life.

With JeeYoga we will explore these ideas through different viewpoints, starting with the traditional teachings of Yoga and Ayurveda. These systems explain body and mind functions in terms of Agni (digestive fire) and Prana (life energy), which are considered key to good health and long life.

It’s hard to feel mentally well if our body isn’t supporting that feeling. Likewise, if our mind is anxious or troubled, it’s difficult to feel healthy and light in our body. Yoga is mainly about taking care of ourselves, and to stay healthy and live long, we need to pay attention to both our body and mind as a whole.

What are the top-down and bottom-up approaches?

The bottom-up approach to well-being starts by gradually improving our body and senses—through movement, posture, breathing, diet, and environment. By focusing on these, we create a healthier state. The main idea behind yoga poses (asanas) and breathing exercises (pranayama) is to improve how we feel mentally by first working on the body. When we improve how we move and breathe, it naturally affects our thoughts and emotions, leading to a better balance between mind and body.

This is why the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, written centuries ago, emphasize that mental stillness (yoga, which is defined as “Citta Vrtti Nirodha” or control of the mind’s activity) depends on creating calmness and well-being in the body as well.

The top-down approach focuses on practices like meditation, chanting, mantras, and mindfulness. Here, we work on our thoughts and mind directly, which then positively influences our body. Classical yoga places great importance on mental focus and peace.
